The Austrian Winery Boom - A Wine and Architectural Miracle
March 27 - May 25, 2008
Austria’s new generation of winemakers has built a reputation for high quality white and red wines – and spectacular new wineries to house their operations. While international star architects are designing wineries around the world, Austria’s homegrown architects have developed a unique and symbiotic relationship of international significance between contemporary architecture and cutting-edge viticulture—moving out of garages to elegant exposed-concrete structures and well-designed wooden stalls, and setting the stage for the creation and optimized production of fine wines for stylish wine-tastings. The Austrian Winery Boom presents more than 40 of these projects in a strikingly designed exhibition from the Architekturzentrum, Vienna.

The exhibition focuses particularly on Austrian experiences, offering a study of the development from the manor winery to the high-tech wine factory. Individual buildings and architectonic interventions are presented with a wide variety of materials such as blueprints, photographs, models and sketches, along with individual vintners' and wineries' wine bottles. The individual projects are displayed in a modular system of plexiglass containers made in Vienna using advanced digital manufacturing technology. This innovative exhibition design is the work of SPAN (Matias del Campo and Sandra Manninger), who not only conduct extensive research into digital design, manufacturing processes and new hightech materials, but also realize these technologies in numerous installations and exhibition designs.

Major contributions to the wine/architecture collaboration were made by three Austrian architects: Hempel + Fonatti, Anton Mayerhofer and Werner Schattmayr. Frank Ghery, Steven Holl, Herzog and de Meuron and other archistars have created fascinating buildings in which the ritual of drinking good wine takes on a particularly dreamy dimension. "Wine is not alcohol, wine is culture," states one famous winery’s slogan. Their projects and many more, along with Steven Holl’s Langenlois project, are illustrated in a series of models, photographs, sketches and renderings.

The Austrian Winery Boom exhibition is the centerpiece of a thorough exploration of contemporary Austrian food and wine at COPIA that will include special classes, tastings, multimedia and events throughout April. For dates and information, visit www.copia.org.

WINE ACROSS AMERICA
A Photographic Road Trip
Opens November 10, 2007 – June 2008

For the first time in history, America has wineries in all 50 states. WINE ACROSS AMERICA is about the amazing wine revolution that has led to the establishment of more than 5,000 wineries across the U.S., producing nearly 500 million gallons and attracting over 20 million visitors to tasting rooms per year.

Traveling over 80,000 miles, husband-and-wife journalist team, photographer Charles O’Rear and writer Daphne Larkin, crisscrossed America for two years to capture this extraordinary story. Their journeys took them from Alaska to Hawaii, New England to Florida and everywhere in between, resulting in a book of 300 spectacular photographs accompanied by lively text.  Along their way, O’Rear and Larkin found an astonishing myriad of people and places that extend beyond the tasting room to the history, geography, faces, creativity and passion that make this country’s wine industry unique to any others in the world.  The book has been translated into an engaging exhibition comprised of 60 photographs, which premiered at COPIA on November 10.

Curated by COPIA’s Director of Exhibitions Neil Harvey, the exhibition will tour various wine venues across the country.

Contemporary Ceramic Vessels
April 21, 2006 - ongoing
Santa Fe collector Sandy Besser set out three years ago to assemble a collection of more than 100 handmade functional vessels by many of the country’s leading and emerging ceramicists.

The selection of contemporary ceramics showcases a variety of techniques, materials and processes. While each piece is creatively unique, together they share a sense of whimsy, and play with our notion of conventional ceramics. Ranging in shape and color—from the extreme to the familiar—each ceramic is functional for use with food or drink or can stand alone as a work of contemporary art.

Besser  remarks, “I love the idea of these objects at COPIA. Ceramic artists are the most fun-loving, sharing group of people. They get together. They share … I think they embody a lot of what COPIA’s mission is all about.”

Gift from the Diane and Sandy Besser Collection.
