Raw Talent: Food Photography by Chef Holly Peterson
November 2007 – January 2008
Holly Peterson’s food photography captures the beauty and simplicity of ingredients from the chef’s point of view. As healthy for the body as they are appealing to look at—Spring Carrots and Onions, Dragon Fruit and Kaffir Lime Morning Glory--each food shown is loaded with phytonutrients and has chemopreventive qualities.

Raw Talent limited edition photographs are for sale and all purchases contribute to cancer research. “Eat well, stay healthy! The more we study cancer, the more we learn about the importance of the foods we eat.”

Holly Peterson studied viticulture and enology at UC Davis before training in Paris at La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine to become a highly skilled chef. She has cooked for the American Embassy in Paris, as well as many three-star restaurants, and currently operates an ultra fine special events company, Food and Wine Dynamics, known throughout the world for its memorable special events. VINETVM ET CAELVM, vineyard and sky
Vineyard paintings by Ira Yeager
July 27 to October 21, 2007
Preview Reception: Friday, July 27, 2007, 5:30-7:30 pm
Ira Yeager is one of the most celebrated artists painting in the Napa valley today.  He has lived and worked in exotic locations around the world, immersing himself in the local culture and always combining his life with his art.  Mirroring the desires of the 18th century aristocracy he has portrayed with such affection, Ira has sought the simple beauty of country living as a respite from the strains of the city. In these latest works depicting the landscapes surrounding his studio here in the heart of wine country, he records his own translocation and captures the charm that has lured so many others.

“After all the nomadic years, Yeager is now grounded in the Napa Valley and is able to respond to the land with all its verdant glory.”  To accompany the exhibit, a fully illustrated catalogue with original essay by Peter Selz will be available.

Hungry Planet: What the World Eats

February 9 - September 30, 2007

You can tell a lot about a country by the foods its people eat.  Hungry Planet: What the World Eats is a fascinating photo essay documenting what people consume each week in different cultures around the globe. Internationally known photojournalist Peter Menzel, in collaboration with writer Faith D’Aluisio, traveled to 24 different countries to capture 30 families in photos and words. From Mongolia to Egypt, from Guatemala to the U.S., the images and text put a human face on global diets, displaying each family’s weekly provisions along with their food-related environments.  The Hungry Planet: What the World Eats exhibition offers a peek at the pair’s book of the same title, which was published in 2005 by Ten Speed Press.

Originally curated by COPIA in 2005, Hungry Planet has just returned from a national tour, including the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, IL.  Over 500,000 visitors nationally have now seen this exhibition.  In October, Hungry Planet will continue tour with an exhibition at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. And an abridged version of the exhibition will tour nationally through ExhibitsUSA—beginning with Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding, CA, July through November 2007.

The companion book Hungry Planet: What the World Eats (published in 2005 by Ten Speed Press), which contains an insightful foreword by Marion Nestle and provocative essays from Alfred W. Crosby, Francine R. Kaufman, Corby Kummer, Charles C. Mann, Michael Pollan, and Carl Safina, received the 2006 esteemed James Beard Foundation Book Award and is available in Cornucopia, COPIA’s gift shop.

Join us for a special event with Peter Menzel and writer Faith D’Aluisio on May 20—panel discussion, reception and booksigning.

Planting Roots, Reaping the Harvest: The Contribution of Italian Immigrants and their Descendants to the Napa and Sonoma Wine Industry
April 16 – September 30, 2007

The tradition of drinking table wine at home in Italy followed immigrants to the US where the majority of Italians either made wine at home, or purchased it from other Italian families. From these beginnings scores of Italians, either by growing and selling grapes or making wine, started businesses—many of which have been passed down from generation to generation—shaping the California wine industry as we know it today through such well known names as Foppiano, Gallo, Martini, Mondavi, Pedroncelli, Sattui, Simi and more. Through a compilation of old and new photographs, and fascinating original artifacts, Planting Roots, Reaping the Harvest tells the story of visionaries, pioneers and entrepreneurs whose hard work and dedication helped make Napa and Sonoma counties the prime wine producing area of Northern America.

Planting Roots, Reaping the Harvest: The Contribution of Italian Immigrants and Their Descendants to the Napa and Sonoma Wine Industry was organized and produced by THE MUSEO ITALOAMERICANO, Fort Mason Center, San Francisco.

Crush, Shoot and Savor:  Wine Photography by Sara Matthews
September 15, 2006 – January 29, 2007
Sara Matthews

Crush, Shoot & Savor: The Wine Photography of Sara Matthews presents a unique vision of an age-old tradition. Using the camera as her brush, Matthews captures the abstract perspective of the process of winemaking using qualities of color, light, shadow and pattern. She creatively isolates unique elements of agriculture and technology to challenge our notion of sweeping vineyards and stately winery architecture, drawing our attention to an intimate interpretation of the beauty and richness of the harvest.

Organized by COPIA in cooperation with the photographer.
